poetry about emotions
What is poetry about emotions?
There are as many definitions of poetry about emotions as there are poets. In addition, the term poetry about emotions is often used in various meanings. We deal here with the most common definitions of the three most used meanings of poetry:
1. Poetry is a language expression with a strong emphasis on
form, sound, and imagery.
2. Poetry about emotions.
3. Poetry is an elusive aesthetic experience.
Below a further explanation about these different definitions of
poetry.
Broad definition of poetry.
Definition:
1- Poetry is a language expression with a strong emphasis on form, sound and imagery.
Explanation:
In the definition above
we mean by form, among other things, the division into verses, deliberate
breaks of rules and experimental use of fonts. By sound, we mean things like
rhyme, meter, and melody. With imagery, you can think of comparison,
personification, and metaphor.
The broad definition of
poetry is mainly used in the opposing pair of words: prose and poetry. The prose is
primarily about content. Forms, sounds, and imagery are less important.
Of course, poetry is also
about content, but the form, sound, and imagery are just as important. In other
words: the extent to which form, sound, and imagery is important in a language
expression is what defines the distinction between prose and poetry.
It seems an uneven distribution because the prose is very broad. After all, besides literary prose, we have infinitely many other forms of prose, for example: newspaper articles, business letters, brochures, research reports, e-mails, etc.
However, those who think for a moment will
realize that the broad definition of poetry mentioned above can also include
many different language expressions, including:
- Literary poetry
- Love poem
- Leisure poems
- Casual poems
- Songs
- Children's rhymes
- Sinterklaas poems
- Rap battles etc.
Even some advertising slogans are
actually poetry. What do you think about 'Wonderfully clear Heineken'? Without
the alliteration, this advertisement would not be so appealing. Or how about
'Craftsmanship is mastery'? Here are the rhyme and symmetry that gives power to
this slogan.
By the way, the line between prose and
poetry is sometimes vague. There are various language expressions in which it
is not always clear whether something is poetry or prose. Take the prose poem
and the Very Short Story (ZKV). The first is poetry and the second is prose,
but sometimes they look a lot like each other.
Furthermore, the term "language
expression" makes the definition even broader. Language expression means
that the definition is not limited to poetry recorded in letters on paper (or
on the computer screen), but the definition also includes language expressions
that only exist as spoken or sung language. That is why songs and rap battles
also appear in the list above.
Scary definition of poetry.
2. Poetry about emotions.
Explanation:
This definition of poetry coincides
with what we in the broad definition count as 'literary poetry'. The term
"literary" means that a value judgment is attached to this
definition. It is not about the opinion of simple poetry lovers, like you and
me, no, it is the value judgment of a select group of poetry authorities that
counts here.
With poetry authorities, you can think
of literary publishers, reviewers of national newspapers, professors of
literature, editors of literary magazines, jury members of poetry prizes and
others in the position to tell us: these poems are poetry and these poems are
not poetry.
A literary publisher does this by
publishing the work of one poet and throwing the manuscript of the other poet
in the trash. A reviewer does this by praising one collection of poetry while
he dismisses the other collection of poetry as amateurish fiddling.
In their value judgment, the poetry authorities use quality-oriented criteria such as originality, expressiveness, craftsmanship, etc. However, commercial and social interests often also play a role. For example, a publisher may publish a collection of poems by a well-known Belgian politician, while many poets who write really good poems will never find an interested publisher. A well-known name simply sells better than an unknown name. Friendship policy often also plays a role.
The conclusion is that the poetry enthusiast can only rely to a limited extent on the opinion of the poetry authorities. Therefore, read especially what you like and listen as little as possible to others. That is the best way to enjoy poetry.
The spiritual definition of poetry about emotions.
Definition:
3- Poetry is an elusive aesthetic experience.
Explanation:
This
definition may sound rather vague and actually, it is. This is because a
difficult state to describe is meant. The term "elusive" indicates
that in this definition. That is why this definition may only be understood in
relation to aesthetic experiences that can be interpreted. A few examples:
If you are
impressed by the craftsmanship with which an antique cherry wood cabinet has
been put together hundreds of years before, then that is an explainable
aesthetic experience. Even if you are emotionally touched by a poem, because it
describes a feeling that you recognize, but that you have never been able to
put into words so aptly, then you can explain why you like the poem. The fact
that tourists find our flower fields so fantastic is due to the primary colors
and the rectangular shapes in which we have captured these colors: a rectangle
yellow, next to a rectangle red. It looks like a Mondrian painting.
For all
three of the above aesthetic experiences, logical explanations can be devised
and therefore they are not poetry according to this definition. This even
applies to the example with the poem. However, if after all the analyzes it
still remains elusive, why we find something beautiful or special, then there
is poetry.
However,
this prosaic explanation also falls short. That is why I now leave the floor to
Remco Campert who manages to explain what poetry actually is in his next famous
poem:
Poetry is an act of confirmation.
I confirm that I live,
that I do
not live alone.
Poetry is a
future, thinking
next week,
to another country,
up to you
when you are old.
Poetry is my
breath, moving
my feet
hesitating sometimes,
about the earth that asks for it.
Voltaire had
smallpox, but
healed
himself by drinking, among other things
120 liters
of lemonade: that is poetry.
Or take the
surf. Smashed
she is not
really defeated on the rocks,
but resumes
itself and is poetry in it.
Every word
that is written
is an attack
in old age.
Finally,
death wins,
but death is
only the silence in the room
after the last word has sounded.
Death is a
emotion.
Quote
of the poetry about emotions.
v Poetry comes from the highest happiness or the deepest sorrow.
